Dental Implants: What They Are and When They May Help

Dr. Srishti Poudel · 3 min read

What does a dental implant replace?

A dental implant is an artificial root placed in the jawbone to support a replacement tooth or bridge. It is not the visible tooth itself: it provides the foundation beneath it. Implant treatment can replace one, several or all missing teeth. [2]

An implant may avoid reshaping healthy neighbouring teeth to support a bridge. It may also help support a denture when conventional options are difficult. But implants are not automatically necessary: a bridge, a different denture design or no treatment may be reasonable alternatives after assessment. [1]

Start by explaining what you want help with: a particular gap, concerns about appearance or difficulties with your current denture. Ask, “What would an implant change for me compared with the alternatives?”

Who may be suitable?

Implants may replace teeth lost through injury, gum disease or other causes. Assessment considers general and oral health, gum condition and the amount of supporting bone. Healthy gums and adequate bone matter; suitability cannot be decided from the appearance of a gap alone. [2]

Tell your dentist about your health conditions and medicines. Smoking raises the risk of an implant not joining properly with the bone. [1]

What does treatment involve?

Treatment involves assessment, sometimes bone grafting, implant placement and fitting the replacement teeth. Not everyone needs a graft. Several visits and months of treatment may be involved; ask for a timeline specific to your plan. [1]

Risks and long-term care

An implant may not join successfully with the bone, and components can loosen or wear over time. Seek dental advice promptly if a component feels loose. Implants can be long-lasting with proper care, but they are not guaranteed to last for life. [1]

Implants still need brushing, cleaning between teeth and regular dental reviews. These help control plaque and reduce the risk of disease around the implant. Follow-up checks monitor the implant, surrounding gums and remaining teeth. [2]
