A common cause: irritated gums
Plaque build-up on teeth irritates the gums. Redness, swelling, soreness and bleeding during brushing can be signs of gum disease. Bleeding gums should be checked by a dentist rather than assumed to be harmless. [1]
What you can do at home
Brush at least twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth daily using floss or interdental brushes. Spit after brushing without rinsing, and avoid mouthwash immediately afterwards. [1]
Why a dental assessment matters
Early gum disease may benefit from improved cleaning habits and professional cleaning. More severe disease may need additional treatment or specialist referral. Gum disease can lead to receding gums, loose teeth or an abscess. [1]
Before agreeing to treatment, ask: What has the examination shown? What is the proposed treatment meant to address? Is routine cleaning enough, or is further assessment needed?
When to seek care
Book a dental visit for bleeding, swollen or painful gums, or bad breath. Request an urgent appointment for very sore, swollen gums, loose teeth, mouth ulcers, red patches, or a mouth or lip lump. [1]
